Job Purpose:
To advise on specialist aviation safety matters, particularly the investigation of incidents and accidents involving the Emirates Group, in accordance with the standards and practices set out in ICAO Annex 13, the Emirates Group SMS and relevant safety procedures, and as defined by the General Civil Aviation Authority of the UAE. To support and / or conduct safety investigations and produce investigation reports that identify root cause, systemic safety hazards and deficiencies to both air and ground operations, and containing recommendations to prevent future occurrences and enhance operational safety.
Job Outline:
- Provide expert advice and opinion to other departmental staff, Emirates Group management and other entities as required, in matters that influence aviation safety. This includes flying operations, air traffic control (ATC), technical / engineering, cabin, airport and ground operations, flight data analysis, human factors, training, operational management, etc. Participate in formal and informal interdepartmental and external industry meetings.
- Utilise specialised knowledge and experience to manage the investigation of safety incidents involving Emirates Group staff, aircraft, equipment and associated facilities. In order to determine causal factors, write comprehensive and robust investigation reports, making recommendations to prevent repetition and thereby improving safety.
- As directed, lead or participate in an independent multi-disciplinary investigative team providing expert knowledge and experience to the investigation of accidents, or serious incidents, in any part of the Emirates Group. This may include reacting at short notice and liaising with State Authorities appointed to investigate incidents and accidents involving Emirates Group aircraft or ground operations.
- In consultation with VP-FS, assign actions and enlist involvement of staff from other departments, in the investigation of incidents, ensuring adequate and timely responses are made by line management and verifying the adequacy of final closure action. Make certain that recommendations are effective, achievable, accepted and implemented so that appropriate safety standards are maintained.
- Review and select suitable safety related information (internally or externally), bringing this to the attention of the Safety Training Manager and / or Safety Promotions Specialist, for dissemination throughout the Group to increase awareness and aid in safety education; to guide and assist line management in the resolution of safety deficiencies in order to assist in developing a generative safety culture.
- Conduct risk-based trend analysis and communicate potentially hazardous conditions to management, flight / cabin crew and operational ground / technical staff (as appropriate), in a clear and timely manner. Provide employees with advice to assist in resolving safety deficiencies and raising overall safety awareness.
- Maintain up-to-date expert knowledge by participating in, or observation of, safety-critical line department tasks. Undergo appropriate specialised training and recurrent practice where needed, thereby ensuring a multi-skilled capability in all aspects of the job, including non-core activities such as safety audits etc.
- Contribute to the ongoing development of the Group Safety Management System (SMS) to ensure that proactive safety processes are integrated into normal operational procedures, thereby adding to the overall efficiency and safety of the operation.
- Educate people in safety management, including third party users and prospective customers of the safety data system (Coruson), plus help department staff, interns and trainees, developing their careers.
- Participate in a rota, as the Duty Safety Manager, thereby providing the Emirates Group with a 24 / 7 point of contact for safety incidents and accidents. Activate any Group Safety crisis response to accidents and serious incidents.
Qualification
Qualifications & Experience:
- A min of 3 years experience as an operating Captain with Emirates (Required)
- Degree relevant to aviation safety management or similar (Preferred)
- Aircraft Accident Investigator qualification (Preferred)
- Boeing experience (Required)
- Strong technical report writing skills (Required)
- This role is a part-time office and part-time flying position (Required)
- 11 days in the office per month (Required)
